JULIE JULIA AND MY 2ND DEGREE BURNS

What a beautiful movie. I have not laughed in a movie like that in a long time. Meryl Streep was fantastic!

There were a couple of things that really stuck with me and one was the beautiful marriage that Julia andher husband shared. The support they had for eachother and the joy they brought to each other was so touching. The laughter they shared while dining alone together was so cute and they were really there for each other to hold one another up. Bravo!

The scene with the onions had me laughing forever.

It was an excellent movie and my daughter enjoyed it too. In-fact, she is already in line to buy the movie to bring home. :)

Well the following day I decided to make a pot roast and to get a little creative with it after watching the movie. I didn't get very far. I dried my roast real good like Julia had said to do. (lol) I then preceded to season and flour it while the oil was heating up in the pan so I could brown the roast.

I would say I put in about a cup of oil. 1st mistake - too much oil! I heated the oil up good and it was hot and ready. I then picked up the roast with a fork and with my hand then I gently put it into the pan. Well I got to the pan with the roast and started to put the roast in and at the end of the procedure it fell off the fork and the hot oil (yes you guessed it) it basically poured over my right hand.

I have been burned in my kitchen many times, but this was different. I screamed so loud I was freaking myself out. My daughter came running over to me as I had my hand under the cold faucet even though it didn't feel cold. My daughter Summer went to the freezer immediately and added the ice into the sink and added my hand with the running water in it.

I really wasn't sure what to do next so we ended up calling up my husband who was still at work, but he said he was leaving right then. He works in LA about 1 hour away from home with all the traffic, so Summer decided to call up my dad at the family store and he said he was on his way over to help me. With traffic it would take him about 25 min to get to my house.

About .45min later we get a phone call from my dad and my hand is still in the sink and he is wondering where my mom is. My daughter says, "What? Where are you Papa?" He said, "I am at home looking for your grandma because you said she burned herself." I hear my daughter get mad and say , "NO PAPA, its my MOM THAT GOT BURNED". He then told her he would come right over which would now be at least another .30min with traffic, so Summer said, "NO my dad is on the way home and he will take care of mom."

Now my daughter calls up my husband to see if he is near home and guess what he hasn't even left work like he said he was doing over an hour ago. Now my daughter gets a big bowl for me so I can sit down with my hand in the water and my husband said he is now leaving work. In the meantime my daughter is calling family and friends for advice and looking for information on the internet. By the way she just turned 14 and she was so attentive and wanted me to get to the hospital, but I couldn't drive with the way my hand was. So then we get a hold of my mom and she convinces me to call 911.

I get my nerve up and call 911. Yes, I was embarrassed. (lol) I explained to them what happened and they switched me over to the fire dept and the guy on the other endwas so so kind and he wanted to come over immediately andI told him, "no, no, no I will find a way to the hospital." I just wanted to make sure that I needed to go.

In the meantime I know my husband is not going to be in a good mood when I tell him he has to take me to the hospital beings he had band practice this night, getting ready for a big concert with Warrant this Friday night. I was right, he came home not in a good mood when we explained to him I was told to go to the hospital.

My Husband (Jeff) and I get into his truck and he starts driving like a crazy man. We live in the canyon and it is 45mph and he went 60mph going around cars on a one lane road. Oh and I had my bucket of water with me and the water was spattering out of the bowl and I could feel my blood pressure going up. Now we are on the fwy and we almost get in a car accident with a big rig and I screamed because I thought we were now going to die. My brother calls us while we are driving and I breakdown crying. I truly believe Jeff was in a hurry because he wanted to hurry and get me out of the hospital so he could get to practice. :(

He gets me into the ER and they take me in immediately. I have 2nd degree burns I am told and they take my blood pressure and yes it was very high. Then they tell me I have to have a tenic (sp) shot, oh no all I wanted them to do was take away my pain. My husband saw my grief and held my hand while I got my shot andthen they came in to give me another shot for the pain. These shots were not pleasant.  My husband realized now he was not going to make band rehearsal and was now very attentive to me. They said I will feel loopy and the pain should calm down in about 10min. Well 10min passed and I was loopy and I was still in pain and they said it will kick in soon. In the meantime they put cream all over my hand and wrapped it up and about .45min later I was dizzy and the pain had lessened. However, now I wanted to throw up from the medicine.

Was the nightmare going to ever end? Got home tried to throw up, but I couldn't so I laid on my stomach and I passed out. THANK GOD!

It is now a new day and I am feeling tired, but much better and I am not taking any of the medicine they gave me. I have no desire to feel sick again.

The pot roast never got cooked, but I sure did.

Your friend,

Concetta

WOW!!

What an adventure. My heart and my hand are throbbing for you as I read this. And what's this about getting a spider bit.

Honey when it rains it pours. I am grateful that you are OK

And next time remember oil expands when you heat it so just a few teaspoons will do.

Hope you get another chance to make your roast.

I really want to see the movie.

Way to go Summer!!!

I hope you keep a journal of some kind. I can imagine all of the things you've dealt with as a mom and a wife over the years! You have a great gift of writing as you kept me on the edge of my seat! I'm sure you could draw on your own experiences and come up with some really cool stories! The main thing is that you are okay and your family was there for you! Wishing you a speedy recovery!! Oh I hope your eye gets better too! :)

Hi Concetta,

I'm so sorry that your first time experimenting while in the kitchen turned into a disaster. I hope the pain from your burn, as well as your embarrassment has completely subsided and that you're healing now. I've been burned before and it is quite painful. An oil burn is supposed to be one of the worst - you poor thing!

I hope this doesn't discourage you from cooking - or using oil - in the future.

Love you!!!

Shelly

Does this mean that Summer is off grounding now? Hello...you guys could have called me! You did the right thing with the cold water...ice no...but as long as it doesn't come into contact with the burn you're ok. I'm so sorry this happened to you! Burns suck and are painful for a while. You should take the pain medicine as needed and if need be, call your doctor for some anti-nausea medicine to go along with it. You can't heal when you're in pain. The body concentrates on the pain rather than the wound. Anyway Concetta...let me know if there is anything I can help you with! Hey Bob...maybe you can run over and make her a roast!! Great job Summer...and Jeff!

Dear Mrs.Concetta,

I am wickedly sorry in respects to your Hand,Honor and more importantly, that poor roast!

No teaching or movie of mine should have you thinking that you should have enough oil in a pan, to not only burn your bloody hand, but, to deep fry a poor roast!

God Almity, what were you thinking? I take great care and consideration when sharing my recipes. My knickers are in bunch just thinking of the pain and anguish you are going through!

Just know my dear, that I feel your pain and wish nothing but a thorough and speedy recovery!

Please remember, be it a roast or a Tiki party for friends...Hire a professional!

Cheers Love,

Julia

I'm sorry about your burns....wow, that sounds awfully painful!! For some reason...a lop sided cake comes to mind...hehehehe Love you, take care!!!!

It sounds like you have the kind of luck that I have (LOL)! I can say even though I know how to cook (and many say I cook very well) my wife will not allow me in the kitchen! She says I am too accident prone and fears I will either burn the house down or kill myself in the process of trying to cook a "good" meal! So my three children have been told (by my wife)if they see me going into the kitchen to run and and tell mommy (LOL)! Wonderful Hub!!

Blessings To You

Hey Concetta! You poor thing. I'm so sorry to hear about your accident, but I have to say that I enjoyed your story. I must also admit that I was smiling, while reading it. You can spank me for that if you want to (with your good hand, of course!)

I'm glad to hear that you are feeling well enough to not take the pain pills. I believe there's a black market for those, on Craigslist (just kidding!)

If I can be of service to you, please don't hesitate to call me. Oh, I'll be out of town until Monday.

All kidding aside. I'm glad you are feeling better and I'm very proud of Summer.

Talk to you soon!

Love, HKF (ask Bob, he knows who I am!)

This was a great movie! Meryl, as always, was fantastic. The scene that had me rolling was the one when Julia and Paul were eating when they first got to France and the food was so good, they just couldn't find the words!! Great movie. Great post!

Not sure about 2nd dregree though. But back to the movie I loved it. Laugh so hard thought younger couple next to us was going to have me thrown out. lol lol I thought the younger couple in the story were awsome also.
